Virtual Table Top Software

Post by Senkusha »

Yesterday, I took the plunge and sunk $50 that I didn't really have in to the purchase of The Foundry, a table top simulator for online role play which allows you to host maps, dice rolls, and character sheets. I think there's also a chat function too. The cool things about this software:
  • Only the Game Master (Host) needs to purchase the software.
  • All the players can access the game via Web Browser.
  • Game Mechanics are built in via Player Mods (for example, Shadow Run 5e).
  • And I believe everything is truly optional.
So, now I'm not sure what to do with this, as I'm not currently running a game, but it was interesting to peek at all the games that aren't officially supported that I own! Go figure, I collect mostly obscure games anyway! Maybe I should sit down and build some Mods for these games and offer them up. Too bad I couldn't get paid for my time and dedication doing that-- I need more time and freakin' work is getting in the way!!

Anyway, does anybody else use this technology?

Sounds like this would be great for virtual sessions if everyone can't make the game.

So in a way it's similar to Roll 20 but the GM has full control over everything? That's pretty damn cool! Maybe if we can plan a game night for the forum, and if you get the time perhaps we could utilize it? Or you could integrate it on your forum!

I'd be down for a online session, just know I'm at in person games on Tuesday nights.

I'm not sure if it could be integrated into a forum, I'll look at it. There may be some sort of API functionality though. I barely got a peak at it the other day. Too many distractions currently.

I'm only free Thursdays and Fridays. This is why I prefer forum/writing-based role playing. Now, if I can find a DESK job that's CLOSER to home, then this may change for the better.

Just a quick update: I've checked the module software database versus all the games that I own, and currently have the following options:
  • City of Mist*
  • Cortex Prime
  • Fate Core
  • Fudge RPG
  • Hero 6e
  • NewEdo
  • Systems Without Numbers*
You'll notice I didn't list Dungeon's & Dragons. Although I do own the 3.5e version, I'm really not all that interested to play it.

* Denotes a full range of included games for the mentioned System. For example, City of Mist also will work with Metro: OtherScape and Queerz!. Systems Without Numbers will work with Cities Without Numbers, Stars Without Numbers, and Worlds Without Numbers.

Yeah the only days I would be free would be Sundays and Mondays, and even then it would depend on the time of day too. I work super early in the morning, though my schedule is changing on September 2nd. Roleplaying on forums definitely is easier when everyone is on a different schedule for sure. Also phpBB doesn't really seem to have API integration unfortunately. Xenforo and other paid forum software does, I've looked into it since I was going to share the forum with this guy over on Reddit who made an app that connects forums with Reddit alternatives like Lemmy. But I'll have to share a different one.

Given that our schedules don't seem to be in alignment, I think a forum PbP game is probably the best way to go, as awesome as the VTT software is looking, it's just not really practical for our use here/now.

This is really an excellent choice at some pretty bargain prices, coming in at just $50, you can create browser-based games that allow players to connect right out of the browser, which is indeed an awesome feature.

It looks like it has a Journalism capability too, which would make it a good choice for Solo role playing as well.
