Fabula Ultima

Post by Senkusha »

I'll admit right now, that I know very little about this game, however, it's gotten rave reviews, won some awards, and there seems to be a lot more support behind this game than with some of other role playing games within my library.

You can get the FREE Press Start guide on DriveThru RPG to get an idea about what this game is all about. Basically, I feel that this game would be a very welcome fit here, considering this table top role playing game is attempting to give players that JRPG video game feel. I purchased it because, well, there's an anime vibe to it, and it does have that Japanese quality to it that I adore.

Unfortunately, I haven't yet played this game-- I'm actually still reading the rules to this game, but doing this alone seems harder than if I were with an established table. And after I read the rules, and I think I'll have a good grasp for the gameplay, I'm planning on purchasing the Techno Fantasy Atlas (expansion), because I like science fiction and general dystopian play in my fantasy.

To play this game, you'll need a variety of dice (d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20), which is awesome for those of us who love rolling dice! You'll also want some scratch paper too.

Anyway, let me know if you've tackled this game, or if it sounds interesting at the very least. Maybe someday, I can actually play this game!

Ooh this sounds awesome! I think my wife and I would love this, I can definitely see that they've based the game off of JRPGs for sure just by looking at the example character sheets. I wonder if we could play this on Roll 20? That way her friends from New York could join in. Or heck we could get something going here too!

It appears so. https://blog.roll20.net/posts/jrpgs-com ... la-ultima/

I'd be willing to play. Not sure if I'm ready to GM it though.

I'll see if my wife would be interested in playing as well. Maybe I could get her friends interested too? I don't think I'd be a good GM either, my wife wanted to be the Dungeon Mistress next time we played D&D so if she's interested and her friends are too, maybe she could try? She's never been one before though... But it'll be a learning experience for all of us lol.

Indeed! I'm totally cool with it being a learning experience. I'm just really glad to not being the GM for a change! :)

Update, my wife is interested but her friends aren't really into tabletop RPGs. :S But, if we could get enough people here to play we might actually be able to set up a game on Roll 20! Though I would need to figure out everyone's schedules and pick a perfect day/time. Also we probably all live in different timezones. If this happens, there's going to need to be lots of planning ahead of time lol. But this game really does look like tons of fun and it could be a cool thing to incorporate here!

This is one reason why I enjoy play by post via forum. It's more asynchronous so scheduling isn't really an issue. The biggest problem with using this method is players vanishing, forgetting about the game or site, or not knowing what to follow up with-- especially if the last post is a one-line sentence, like a reply to a question without providing an Action Beat.

Yeah I've tried getting a roleplay started on a Teen Titans forum, it was going well for a bit but then I was the last person to reply and no one else kept it going so it died. Though it is nice to have a roleplay on a forum, you're not too pressured to immediately think of something on the spot like in a real time environment. (Even though that's part of the fun of a tabletop game lol.) Still text roleplays in general are pretty damn cool, I just have more experience with larping. Maybe if I can get my wife to join the forum, we might be able to get something started either way. We should probably see if other people would like to join.

Something to think about. I'm sure phpBB has a dice roller mod, but you should think about how a game is going to handle randomization. Would you want public dice rolling (via a mod), or would you trust people to roll physical dice on their desk and post the results?

I think I would rather go with a dice roll mod, however sadly it seems like all the ones that were being developed are abandoned. I could possibly make a thread on the support forum to see if anyone could make one, I don't know enough to develop one myself lol. It seems more practical that way than having players roll dice in real life lol, you just never know who would get a bad roll and say "well I just rolled a nat 20"!
