Big Eyes Small Mouth

Post by Senkusha »

I've been a fan of BESM since 2005, when I found a copy of Second Revised Edition in a comic book shop. I had recently discovered anime back then, and to find out there was a role playing game that tried to emulate that feeling of 2D exaggeration was like finding water in a desert--pure ecstasy!

I really enjoy this game because you can play pretty much any genre, from goofy comedy to scary horror, even frankly bizarre . It's a very open-minded system. Once you know the Attributes (special abilities), you can create any character you can imagine. It's a Point Build system, so the players get together with the Game Master and determine how powerful the characters are going to be. One thing I will say, based on my personal experience, is that while you can earn Advancement Points, the game truly works better if you're NOT starting out at "level 1". In fact, the system doesn't have have levels baked into it.

I prefer to play the game as the character you see. Who has the experiences to back up their claim to glory. Those heroes who are already bada--s and tough. You can make a magical character if you'd like, but you have to create your spells. There is no handy-dandy spellbook with premade effects. And instead of Classes, you've got Templates. Which are nothing more than a collection of Attributes and Skills. Feel free to tweak and change to your heart's content. Don't want the ability to do Exorcism? Remove it, and get those Points back for something else!

All you need to play this game is 2d6 and maybe some scratch paper. I've played this game both around a table and online via forum. It's a blast, and I highly recommend it if you want a game that's easy to digest and get to playing quickly.

I've seen a few youtube gameplays on it, looks interesting. Might play it one day.
