Have you ever been blind sided by a RPG as far as a surpise battle or twist in the storyline?

Yep I got blindsided in Final Fantasy 2 and Legend of Legaia! I won't go into detail since I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, especially with Legend of Legaia since it's my favorite RPG of all time.

That one scene in FF 7, we all know that scene. It sucked and blindsided me so hard.

I knew it was going to happen, I just didn't think it would happen so soon.

I know dot hack series also had a lot of twists in it that I didn't see coming and tough battles that made me struggle.

I still need to play the dot hack series at some point.

There's an anime too right? I vaguely remember seeing things about it back in the day.

Yep, there is a prequel anime to the games, then there is a concurrent anime that comes packaged with each of the first four games, then there is a wrap up silly anime. Then the next series starts with another anime, three and half more games and then the series kind of goes quiet. Also tons of light novel/manga books.
