Role-playing games take many forms but the common rules are on how to build characters, where and when the story takes place, and what happens in it. So, what other format is RPGs using?

Usually action rpgs where you just take control of a character and go wild on some.

Yeah a RPG needs a good story but also needs a decent battle system and level up system too. Though even if the engine is broken, like in the Gen 1 games, if the game is addicting and has cool characters people will play it.

I can handle a bad battle system as long as the story is good. If both are bad, I don't play the game for long.
