Ravenfreak wrote: Thu Jan 01, 2026 7:19 pm Hey everyone, recently I had the urge to start making a Generation 1 hack. In this hack, I plan on changing the rosters of each trainer in the game and they're going to have stronger Pokemon. I don't want to make a carbon copy of Pokemon Blue Kaizo, where the Pokemon are super challenging but I want to make Red/Blue a bit more difficult than it is. So far I've changed the rival's starter to be at level 6 instead of 5. I'm going to change some of the level up movesets for Pokemon such as giving Bulbasaur Absorb over Leech Seed, and giving Squirtle Water Gun first instead of Bubble. As for Charmander, I was thinking about giving it Smokescreen since theoretically it should be able to spit out smoke. (Though it will learn Ember still at the same level.) Brock also has a level 16 Golem now. I need to figure out the rest of the trainer rosters. I will be sharing updates here, and when the time comes to release it I'll add a patch so you can play it!
Oh nice, I wouldn't know how to make a rom hack, but I hope it goes well for you.

So I've changed all the major trainer's rosters. I've tweaked a few Pokemon's starting movesets as well as a few level up movesets. I also changed a few random trainer rosters too, but I need to finish modifying each trainer's rosters. I think once I'm done with that I might get around to changing the puzzles in certain areas, but I'm still debating on if I'm going to do that or just solely focus on making the trainers more challenging. I don't plan on editing sprites or music, I want this to be as vanilla as possible so I probably won't tweak the puzzles lol.

I would change a few puzzles around to keep it interesting and fresh.

Yeah I think I will do that! I won't pull a Blue Kaizo and make the puzzles too frustrating though. There are puzzles that force the player to go through Seafoam Islands to get to Cinnabar, and if you happen to take the wrong path immediately when you step foot in the cave you have to exit the cave to reset your position and take the right path. :?

Make them fun and playful, no one likes bad puzzles.

On top of working on my Pokemon Gen 1 hack, I have started yet another challenge. This time I am going to see which starter does the best in Crystal version, and yes I'm playing through the game with the Kanto starters and Johto Starters. I'm in the middle of doing the Bulbasaur run first, I am about to take on Pryce and afterwards I'll need to probably grind a bit before I can take on Jasmine. Bulbasaur is my favorite Kanto starter, and it's number 1 in the Pokedex which is why I chose to use it first lol.

Nice, sounds like you have a nice adventure going.

It's been a blast so far! I actually didn't have any problems with Jasmine, I beat her my first try lol. I forgot that Steelix doesn't resist grass moves, it's neutral since it's part ground. Her Magnemite were one shots with mud slap, that move has really helped me throughout most of the run since I got it after defeating Faulkner. I know the game will be more difficult once I make it to Red. Also I have a feeling Chikorita's evolutionary line is going to do the worse out of all the starters so I'm not looking forward to using it lol.

I need to jump back into the classic pokemon games again, specially the rom ones. The old games had so much love to them.

The oldschool games really are so much better than the newer ones. I still need to play Legends Z-A and Legends Arceus was awesome but the main line games were mid. There's just something about the old games though, when Game Freak too the time to work on them and make them fun. I know they're broken but they're still fun and you have to go out of your way to really encounter glitches in Gen 2, and even Gen 1. If you do play it again, let us know about it in the thread since I'd love to hear your progress in the games! :)
