Pokemon Gens 1 and 2
Since the only two generations of Pokemon that were released on a 8-bit handheld were Gens 1 and 2 I figured we'd have a mega thread talking about Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal! I think lots of RPG fans started with the old school Pokemon games, like I mentioned in my intro thread I started with Pokemon Yellow and it got me into the genre. So what are your experiences with these old Pokemon games? Did you play them back in the day and were the reason why you got into the franchise? Which do you prefer, Gen 1 or 2? I somewhat prefer Gen 1 because of how broken the games are. (Fun fact Gen 2 is pretty broken as well!) That and seeing how Gen 2 had a real time clock that would drain your battery I think I had more of a fondness for Gen 1 because I can easily go back and play my real copies of the games and not have to worry about losing my save due to the battery dying. Sure Gen 2 had a bunch more features, and even crammed Kanto into it as well but I have more memories of going back and playing Blue over Crystal. (I had Crystal and didn't get Gold or Silver until I was older.)

My first Pokemon game was Red!
I still remember getting it for Christmas one year and my brother got Yellow. We played on his bunk bed for hours. So many fun memories, and the not so fun ones - like huddling under a lamp for light or watching the power light slowly start to dim lol! I played Silver and Crystal on the handheld too. The first two generations were definitely my favourite... but if I had to choose between them I think I'd go for Gen 1.

Man those were the days playing Pokemon when it first came out! I got a copy of Yellow, but my friend's mom thought I stole it from him when he gave me the game. I had to give it back but shortly after I got blue version. :V Gen 3 is actually my favorite generation of Pokemon but it's not a 8 bit game lol. I'll make separate topics for other games.

Pokemon Silver was my first owned game for my game boy color. I remember having to go through hell to get it (my mother wouldn't buy me a copy!) and had to escape from my english class to get it!
I don't know, but back then levelling up was so much fun, but i'd never play that game again in normal speed lol!

Sounds like you had a great time playing it though! I did get to own Silver for a very short time. The same friend who gave me Yellow gave me his copy of Silver too, but I had to give it back. :V I have a Japanese copy of Silver now, but the battery needs to be replaced. Do you remember which starter you picked?Laifot wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 6:10 pm Pokemon Silver was my first owned game for my game boy color. I still enjoy the classic Pokemon games. I play a lot of them still, but hacked versions for GBA.

There's lots of good Pokemon rom hacks for sure! Even though Gen 3 is my favorite, I find myself going back and playing Gen 1 more than any other gen for whatever reason. I guess it's because I know the storyline and the maps like the back of my hand that I can even play Japanese versions of the games and beat them. :V

Ah the good old days of Pokemon! I remember once my friend and I had the same team in Pokemon Yellow and we decided to battle each other. I ended up winning, but man it was close! All that was left was my Mewtwo, but I can't remember what other Pokemon I had on my team.

You know, it'd be cool if Nintendo re-released these games on the Switch. Random thought I know, but I know I'm not the only one who would love it if the main line Pokemon games were released on the Switch. With the Switch 2 coming out soon, makes me wonder if this will ever happen...
